Catch the Reading Bug Summer Reading Challenge:
Monday, June 2 through Saturday, August 2

Children pre-school through 12th grade, with a Sycamore Library Card*, are eligible to register for our summer reading challenge. Registration is open June 2 through June 30.   Come in person to register and receive your reading log and calendar of programs. Keep track of what you read and collect small prizes at the library when you reach 3 reading goals. First day to collect prizes is Monday, June 16.  Last day to collect prizes is Saturday, August 2.  Special free performances are scheduled throughout the summer to keep kids involved and coming back to the library. Dates and times for the special events and programs will be included with registration materials and listed on this website.

*Cardholders from other libraries please pay $5. per child to register for our Catch the Reading Bug program. Or check with your home library to find out about the reading program they are offering this summer



Drop-In Toddler & Caregiver Storytime:
Tuesday 10-10:30 a.m.
June 17th through July 22. Tuesday morning Toddler and Caregiver Storytime with Music and Movement especially for children 18 months to 3 years, though all ages are welcome. Meet in youth services department on the first floor and parade to the big meeting room promptly at 10. 
No pre-registration required


Catch the Reading Bug Special Events: NO Registration Required:
June 12 through July 29
The following events in the library's big meeting room are free and do not require pre-registration.
         
Thursday, July 17, 1 p.m.: Sandi Sylver Ventriloquist: Music, Puppets and Stories
Sandi adds fun to her stories with guitar and her saucer mouthed puppet with attitude.

Tuesday, July 22, 11 a.m.: Mark Nichols Puppet Place Theater
Mark uses a variety of puppetry styles-hand, rod, string and shadow puppets-and works them into the story. Classical and contemporary music accompanies  the puppet production, providing the audience with a thoroughly theatrical experience.

Tuesday, July 29, 2 p.m.: Storyteller Phyllis Horst and Ice Cream Social
This grand finale program is especially for Catch the Reading Bug summer reading challenge participants. Phyllis sings songs and tells audiences favorites and usually includes a special summer readiing themed story. Following the stories, readers and their families in the audience may line up to be served frozen custard donated by Culvers of Sycamore.

Summer Storytimes: Registration Required:
June 17 to July 24
Registration for our Catch the Reading Bug summer reading challenge is required before signing up for these programs. Once registered for Catch the Reading Bug you may register for these programs by phone.  When you call, ask for the Youth Services Desk and be sure to have your reading log folder number handy. All of these programs have limited space.  If your plans change and your child cannot attend, please call to cancel so another child can sign up for that spot.

Library Tours

We welcome visits to your Sycamore Public Library! Tours of the Library are available for Sycamore School classes, home school groups, youth groups, and parenting groups. We will tailor the visit to meet your needs. Please plan your visit at least two weeks in advance by making a reservation with Mary Anderson, the Head of Youth Services. Visits to You!

If your group or class cannot make it to the Sycamore Public Library for a visit, then the library can come to you. We welcome the opportunity to speak with all age groups about Library programs and services or to read stories and create customized book talks for your class or group. Library staff is available to visit any special function or program to encourage reading and use of the library. Please call Mary Anderson at (815) 895-2500 at least two weeks prior to the desired visit date to make arrangements.

Foreign Language Collection

The Foreign Language collection is small but growing in depth. We have focused most of our resources on the Spanish language. We have dual language books with the story in both English and Spanish. There are also materials on the Mexican culture and festivals of Spain. We hope that you will share the colorful and complex cultures of the world with your children.

Parenting Resource Collection

The Parenting Resource collection is full of fun and informative materials for parents, childcare providers and caregivers of children. Selected topics in this collection are health and fitness

SPLAG - Teen Advisory Board


SPLAG is a  volunteer group for 12-18 year olds (7th-12th grade). SPLAG stands for Sycamore Public Library Advisory Group.  It is currently made up of 13 members.  SPLAG runs library book sales and uses these earnings to benefit the library throughout the year.  SPLAG also plans and assists with library programs.  SPLAG meetings take place on the third Wednesday of each month during the school year.  New voices and ideas are always appreciated.

We will be planning a library book sale for our first project.  A date for this sale is yet to be set.

E-Audio and E- Books

E-Books are available through this link from the Sycamore Public Library or for patrons who have come to the library to set up a personal account. There are currently over 4,000 E-Books available. All books can be viewed or checked out for 72 hours. There are more that 4,500 periodicals included and over 3,500 include the full-text af the articles.

NovelList K-8

Novelist is a helpful reader's advisory source that provides annotated lists of books by favorites authors as well as suggestions for read- alike authors. You will need to type in your Sycamore library card number without spaces to access this site.
