Watch your child grow in awareness and trust while practicing skills in communication, movement and social and emotional interactions. Summer Reading Challenge for Children: |

 Five Hour Reading Logs will be available at the Children's Desk starting on Saturday, June 1. Beginning on Friday, June 7, readers may register at the library when they have completed the first Five Hour Reading Goal. Registered readers will get a Dig Into Reading folder with instructions on how to continue and earn more prizes, coupons and chances to win. They may also choose a Mood Eraser when they register their first 5 hours of reading.
This reading challenge is for children pre-school age through going into 6th grade. Children keep track of time spent reading...with an adult or independently, it all counts. Pick up your time sheets at the library then bring them back to claim small prizes, certificates, and coupons for reaching goals of 5, 10, and 15 hours. To keep everyone reading and coming to the library throughout the summer we have planned some special events. Many of these events are free and open to the public. The prizes and materials for the reading challenge program are free for Sycamore Public Library cardholders. Non-cardholders or patrons from other libraries, please pay $5.00 to register and collect prizes.

A book club for third-fifth graders. The summer quest will be to read books that take place in the Midwest. In June, read a juvenile book that takes place in Illinois or Indiana. Tale Weavers features Sycamore Storyteller Bruce Wallace. Just for Kindergarten through 3rd graders, these stories are exciting and sometimes a little scary versions of traditional tales. Wallace is a retired first grade teacher who loves to tell stories and tells them well. He usually brings his guitar. Library staff reads a book version of the stories told. After the stories the group talks over a light snacks and a craft. No pre-registration.

There is so much to be learned about why they are on the planet. The reptiles Jim brings to a presentation are all user-friendly. This is a one of a kind hands-on experience.

Dig Into Reading (birth-6th grade) and Beneath the Surface (7th-12th grade) active summer readers are invited to perform in a talent show. $25. cash prizes for best talent in age group: Under 7, 8-10, 11-13 or 14-18 year olds. One $50. cash grand prize for the very best performance in the show. Judged by a panel of community professionals, performances will be rated for stage presence, originality, focus, and clarity. Pre-registration required for performers.
Audience welcome! Come to the first floor of the library and find a seat in time for the 1 p.m. start to the show.

Like our Storytimes on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, this is an independent Storytime, for children able to come into the story room alone, stay and participate for the half hour without their adult in the room with them. Parents and caregivers should stay nearby in the library and be available to the child. Though not required dress, we welcome pajama wearers.
